If you live in Budapest, and you feel engaged in the local community, you can vote on the 13th of October in the local elections. A lot of people living here are not Hungarians and therefore might not speak the language and do not understand much of what’s going on during the campaign. To help them, we created our Voting Advice Application with the 40 most important local issues. You tell your position, and Voksmonitor calculates which candidate you most agree with based on your answers. Shall we start?
The local elections in Hungary is held in every five years, in autumn. If you have a residence permit, “a lakcimkartya” (an address card), you can vote in the local elections on the 13th of October. You might have received a letter send to your registered address (‘Értesítő a szavazóköri névjegyzékbe vételről’). The polling stations are open from 6 am to 7 pm. You have 3 votes:
- Assembly members of the districts are elected in electoral neighbourhoods with first-past-the-post voting system, with a smaller number of seats being distributed as "compensation" mandates between lists of losing candidates.
- Mayors of the districts of Budapest AND Budapest itself are directly elected in a one-round, FPTP.
It is a pity, that the Hungarian National Election Office did not find it important to share information on the upcoming municipal elections in English. More info here.
Gergely Karácsony (1975, Fehérgyarmat) is a Hungarian political scientist, green politician, member of the National Assembly (MP) from 2010 to 2014. He was elected Mayor of Zugló in 2014, and in 2018, he was the candidate for the position of prime minister of left-wing Hungarian Socialist Party and Dialogue. Karácsony was elected as the united opposition's mayoral candidate through a two-round preliminary election process.
Róbert Puzsér (1974, Budapest) is an independent publicist, columnist, social critic, and television host mostly known for his highly opinionated comments, and harsh debate style. In 2018, he announced to run for Budapest Mayor with his „Walking Budapest program”. Puzsér runs independent.
István Tarlós (1948, Budapest) is the current Mayor of Budapest since 2010. Previously he served as the Mayor of the Third District (Óbuda-Békásmegyer) of the city between 1990 and 2006 (as an independent candidate). Since 2006 he was the Chairman of the Fidesz–Christian Democratic People's Party (KDNP) Fraction-Alliance in the General Assembly of the Municipality of Budapest, and served as the political leader of the initiative "Social Referendum 2008".
